November 11th is an important day for Canadians. It`s a day we use specifically to honor our veterans and those who have fought for our freedoms, freedoms that we often take for granted today. This kind of freedom wasn`t always so easy and it`s taken a century of fighting to get where we are. Remembrance Day is a day we take to reflect and honor it. Which is why it`s a national holiday and has been for nearly a hundred years. This year`s Remembrance Day happens to fall on a Friday, which means that this Remembrance Day is a long weekend.
With that, here are 3 things to do this long weekend in Edmonton.
#3 – Family Movie
Any long weekend is perfect to spend with your family. But sometimes, spending 72 hours with your kids is a bit much. Luckily, there is a compromise. Take ‘em and plop ‘em down inside a movie theater and you can both enjoy a few hours of quality entertainment. The Metro Garneau Cinema offers great family friendly viewing almost every Saturday morning. The Garneau offers a mix of grand foreign films and classic Hollywood stuff, but if you’re looking something a little more mainstream, you can also check out your local Cineplex, which also offers Saturday morning cartoon movies for children.
#2 – Holiday Light Up
It’s never too early to start up the holiday season! Okay, maybe if you’re trying to get into the Christmas spirit pre-Halloween that might be too early. Regardless, it’s November, just give in, and come celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with an afternoon of live entertainment and great food, as well as the lightning of a ginormous tree. It’s another thing that’s great for families as well as anyone who just likes the holidays.
#1 – CFR
The Canadian Finals Rodeo has once again graced us with their presence. It’s a bit of a tradition, and an event that is thoroughly embedded in Edmonton culture. Beyond the typical rodeo festivities, there’s a variety of other awesome activities as well. The Roadhouse has been dubbed the official venue of the CFR and features such talents as: Chris Janson, Brett Kissel, and High Valley. There is also the Miss Rode event, a timely tradition, as well as a variety of great food options, including the Roadhouse Buffet!
